The journey to walk down the aisle to say “I do” takes meticulous planning and preparation for a blissful bride-to-be. It is beneficial to take the time to decide what areas of wedding preparation should be given more attention to detail. The look and style of makeup for a bride is an area where attention to detail is a must. A bride’s makeup and style, whether flattering or not, will be preserved for all to remember by wedding photographs and images taken by guests displayed on social media. Every bride should take time to consider these six helpful tips for flawless, camera ready makeup:
- Hire a professional makeup artist
Weddings are expensive, but the extra investment to hire an expert makeup artist is worth the cost for the expertise and experience in the wedding industry.
A bride should do her research online and through social media to look at the portfolio of work from a potential makeup artist that she is interested in hiring. Do not take a risk with a makeup artist who does not have work that can be seen for review. Hiring an expert makeup artist is worth the cost and will guarantee successful results.
Mallory Fitzgerald, Expert Makeup Artist
“I have been a self-taught freelance makeup artist for 5 years, traveling on location for weddings, photo shoots and television.”
In these 5 years, I have organically created a specialty with bridal makeup and airbrushing. I thoroughly enjoy being a part of a bride’s most special day, and making her feel absolutely beautiful.”
- Schedule a style consultation with a makeup artist
A bride should schedule a time to be dolled up as a run-through for her wedding day makeup with her chosen makeup artist. A consultation with a makeup artist solidifies the direction for the look for the special wedding day. “This is the time you have to change and tweak things to your liking, so you both have an understanding of your needs and wants. This should be done at least a few months before the wedding,” Mallory Fitzgerald said.
- Consider the year’s trends vs. traditional makeup styles
A bride-to-be should try to find a perfect balance between trends in makeup and traditional makeup styles. With the changes of each year come new trends inspired by the latest bridal fashion week. The trends for 2016 in makeup are a nod to the classic, soft beauty style synonymous with Grace Kelly. “Everything seen at fashion week for 2016 is very feminine with soft berry pinks, floral feminine, flushed rose color on lips, and feline inspired winged eyeliner,” Mallory Fitzgerald said.
- Outdoor vs. Indoor
Mississippi’s seasons provide a beautiful backdrop for wedding photographs, but the weather cycles of rain, heat, and humidity can bring challenges for makeup. A bride should remember: “location, location, location,” when settling on her makeup style. An outdoor wedding calls for different types of makeup as opposed to an indoor wedding.
“Airbrush makeup is an incredibly popular and outdoor friendly option. It dries down to a smudge proof, humidity-proof, sweat-resistant finish that lasts well into the night. Traditional makeup is perfect if there are little weather worries. No matter what type you go with, make sure your makeup artist can make it as waterproof and long lasting as possible,” Fitzgerald said.

- Pamper and Prepare
Wedding planning can be demanding and strenuous even for the best multitasking bride-to-be. Remember to take time to pamper yourself and take a break from your busy to-do list. Mallory points out that it is important to “up your water intake, start exfoliating twice a week if you don’t already, and don’t get any type of facial wax less than three days before the wedding. Also make sure you are using a good moisturizer morning and night, no matter if you have oily skin or dry skin. This will ensure your makeup will look flawless, and you will be glowing!”
Another important area to take note of on your wedding day is your time! Schedule more time than you think is needed for wedding morning preparations with makeup and hair. “No matter how late your wedding is you will be strapped for time. Create a clear schedule for hair and makeup for yourself and your bridal party, and approve it with your beauty team in advance. This will ensure everything runs smoothly so you can enjoy the day,” Fitzgerald stated.

- Accent your natural beauty and sense of style
No matter if you decide to work with a makeup artist or do your makeup yourself, wedding day makeup should highlight your features and accent your beauty. Keep your makeup simple, clean, and beautiful. Remember to enjoy your special day as a glowing and gorgeous bride!
