Trousseau???

Growing up in Little Rock, Arkansas, and as a baby boomer, trousseau was something every young Southern girl knew and planned for her wedding.  When you became engaged, you shopped for clothes for all the parties, showers, teas, your honeymoon and beyond.  Today, many young women don’t know or have not heard the word, “trousseau”.

The word “trousseau” literally translates in French to mean “a little bundle.” In the past it referred to the clothing which a bride took with her to the Groom’s home after the wedding.  This eventually gave rise to the idea of the Hope Chest, which the future bride’s father would build when she was a child.  The young lady would fill that chest as she grew into womanhood, and, hopefully, it would be full by the time of her marriage.

The modern bride’s trousseau, however, has evolved into a much more elaborate meaning. Indeed it is now the bride’s entire wedding wardrobe.  This wardrobe is called a “trousseau,” and includes all your wedding fashion needs, from the engagement parties through the honeymoon.  It ranges from under garments to fun beachwear and everything in between.  This includes all the accessories, too.  (Remember, the accessories make the outfit…shoes, purses, hats, jewelry, coats, hats, fun stockings, and more.)

Today’s brides are choosing a variety of clothes, from cocktail dresses for the rehearsal dinner parties to cute t-shirts for the honeymoon vacations.  Clothes for all the bridal events are now leaning towards a more casual elegance, although the Mothers still want something dressy and on the more formal side for the wedding festivities.  The choices are many and vast and sure to fit whatever function the bride will be attending.  Enjoy and have fun shopping!!!
