Weekly Wedding Tip: Cakes

Yum!  This is one of my favorite parts of wedding planning….choosing the cakes.  In most cases, not choosing just one cake, but two cakes…the wedding cake and the Groom’s cake.  Here are some tips to help you in choosing your cake(s).

  1. If you decide on a basic tiered wedding cake, but you can’t decide on what flavor, use different flavors/fillings for each layer to appeal to more tastes.  Note:  When you do this, you may need to order more wedding cake because your guests will want to try more flavors.
  2. Mmmm Chocolate!  Want to know what is replacing the groom’s cake nowadays?  For years, the Groom’s cake has been scrumptious chocolate…milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or a combination of chocolates.  Something new for the chocolate lovers:  Chocolate fountains that offer milk chocolate, dark chocolate and white chocolate alternatives.  You can dip strawberries, marshmallows, cream puffs, pretzels or apples in the chocolate and much, MUCH more!  The only drawback to this alternative is sometimes it can get messy.  Who wants chocolate on their silk dress or silk tie?
  3. Cheese cakes, various varieties and/or various toppings have sometimes been used as the wedding cake, but more so, the Groom’s cake.
  4. Accompany the wedding cake with alternatives such as cream puffs, tarts and/or chocolate dipped strawberries. This is a great way to please all the different sweet tooths at your wedding.
  5. Set one small cake at each guest table instead of a centerpiece. This is a unique and edible centerpiece for each table!  (If children are invited this may not be the best choice)
  6. Are you on a tight budget? Have only the top layer of your wedding cake be the actual real edible cake and make the rest of your wedding cake out of Styrofoam.  then serve a less expensive sheet cake to your guests.  This way you can have a beautiful cake for presentation while keeping your costs down.
  7. Incorporate old photographs of the bride and groom and/or relatives and ancestors for a vintage-looking table cloth for the cake table.
  8. Make your cake topper unique to you by using figurines that show your personalities.  Some companies will even specially make figurines in your likeness!
  9. Superstitious?  Make sure that the bride is the first to cut into the wedding cake. The Romans believed it was an omen of happiness and good-fortune.
  10. If you and your groom have very different tastes, try two small his-and-her cakes, the Bride’s cake being white and fancy and the grooms ‘tuxedo style’ in a black and white.
  11. Let the groom show off his interest or hobbies by having a smaller “Groom’s cakes” If the groom has a passion for football, why not have a fun football shaped cake. Or perhaps he loves fishing, how about a whimsical fish-shaped cake. Have these surround the actual wedding cake. This can be fun and a great conversation piece.
  12. Add more meaning to the cake moment by personally serving a piece to one another’s parents after you’ve fed each other.
