How Can I Have the Wedding of My Dreams & Save Money, Too – Part 1

The other day a mother called me and asked how her daughter could have the wedding of her dreams and save money too.  They are on a strict budget.  I know this family and I know their circumstances.  They are truly on a strict budget.

This is what I recommended:

1.  Guest List:  Keep it simple; keep it small.  This also includes attendants.  The smaller the number, the lower your expenses will be.

2.  Time of Day:  2pm nuptials mean a shorter reception and lower food and drink costs.  You can serve lighter food and little to no alcohol.

3.  Day of Week:  Many venues will work with you on price if you choose a day other than Saturday for your wedding.  Consider Friday or Sunday.

4.  Wedding Cake:  Again, you can have something simple.  Remember, not all the guests are going to want cake.  Plan for about 75-80% of your guests wanting a piece of cake.   You may want to skip the Groom’s cake.

5.  Flowers:  Go with flowers that are locally grown and in season.  Stick with one kind of flower in your bouquet and your arrangements.  Avoid cascades.

6.  Photography:  You do not want to go with the cheapest here.  Many photographers base their package on the hours they will be with you for your ceremony and reception.  Cut the cake, do the first dance, bouquet and garter toss early in the reception.  Some couples even do a mock leave for their honeymoon.   That way the photographer has great photos with lots of people in all the pictures and doesn’t have to stay for hours and hours.

7.  Invitations can be simple and sent in a single envelope.  This keeps your cost of postage in check.  For save the date, email.  For things like guest accommodations, bridal registry, set up a website with all the information.

8.  Skip the favors.  Guests are there to celebrate your union.

9.  Shorten your wedding timeline.  The longer you have to plan, the more you think you need and the costs go up!

10.  Wedding Gown:  Most bridal salons have annual or semi-annual sales.  Try this first.  Maybe there is a family heirloom gown.  Like photography, don’t skimp here.  This is your day, you want to look your best and feel your best.  One of the first ways is how you feel when you look in the mirror and walk down that aisle to your groom.

I hope my suggestions helped my friend and have helped you, too!  I would your ideas for having and wedding of your dreams and saving money, too!
