Tips for the Mother of the Bride or Groom

Mothers are not a member of the Wedding Party; they are the last of the seated guests.  However, the mothers should conform to the formality of the wedding which is set by the groom.  Tuxedos or tails are formal; dinner jackets or suits are less formal.  For the ladies, the hemline signifies how formal the dress will be.  A gown that covers the foot is formal.  Any length from the ankle up is considered street length and less formal.  Mothers do not have to match or blend with the bridesmaid’s dresses.  They will not be in group pictures with the bridesmaids.  Mothers are featured in family pictures and with the bride and groom.  As hostesses of the reception, mothers need to look beautiful and be comfortable.  Gone are days of the Groom’s mother wearing beige.  Now, both mothers are free to choose along as the complement each other.  The mother’s choice of style and color should depend on the season and on the attitude of the wedding.  Remember, the bride’s mother gets to choose the color and style first.
