Tuxedo Etiquette

For many guys, a tuxedo is something new.  What do I do?   What does this mean?  Here is a lesson in Tuxedo Etiquette…

  • Tuxedos are meant for evening attire.
  • For daytime, a suit is fine.  For grooms that prefer something a little more formal go with a cut away or a stroller.
  • For the beach, almost anything goes.  Many grooms are barefoot with white or light colored slacks and a white shirt.
  • More and more grooms are opting for the white dinner jacket which is fine as long as its in the summer or in a warm or tropical climate.
  • The color of your pants always mandate the color of your shoes and socks which should be darker or the same color.
  • Never should the tips of your wing collar shirt be on the bow tie.  Tips always go behind the bow tie.
  • Cummerbund pleats…up or down?  UP!
  • Loosen up!  Whether it’s a two or three-button tuxedo jacket, leave the bottom one unbuttoned.
  • After the festivities begin and the jackets are removed, men will still look their best in a fullback vest.
  • A fullback vest and tie combination should compliment the bridesmaids’ colors.  Either matching colors or  neutral colors are appropriate for the groomsmen.
  • The groom should wear a vest that partners him with the bride like a light or neutral colored vest.
  • If you must wear suspenders, do not try to make a fashion statement or choose a bright color.
