Traditional Thursday: Say “Yes” to Wedding/Special Event Insurance!

Most brides never consider the possibility of a natural disaster that would affect their wedding. Special event insurance, sometimes called “wedding insurance,” is designed for events like weddings and is a very wise decision. Two different types of insurance may be available for you to purchase: cancellation and liability protection. Check with your local insurance provider to see if they offer “special event insurance.” When preparing your wedding plans, make sure to research and seriously considering purchasing insurance to provide peace of mind and monetary relief if a wedding day disaster strikes!

One bride-to-be from Huntsville, Alabama, had her wedding day plans completely changed because of a natural disaster. The April 25-28, 2011, “Super Outbreak” was one of the worst tornado outbreaks in U.S. history. It claimed more than 300 lives, injured 2,775 and was responsible for $10.8 billion in total damage, making it the costliest tornado outbreak in U.S. history. The bride-to-be said,

“I was supposed to have my wedding on Saturday, April 30, 2011 in Huntsville, Alabama, but tornadoes came through & devastated my area!  The day before our wedding there was no electricity so EVERYTHING was closed plus city officials made dusk until dawn curfew in effect in my area and were strictly enforcing it due to looting.  Our food that the caterer bought had ruined because she had no electricity to keep it cold. We wouldn’t have any food, flowers, electricity, tuxedos, or even my wedding dress because the tuxedo shop and bridal shop (they had my dress to steam it) were closed when power went out & stayed closed until power came back on a week later.

The only way the venue would let us have our wedding is if we moved it up to 2:00 p.m. because of the city-wide curfew, but we had no way to contact our guests because all the landline phones in our area were down. Cell service went out as well, so we couldn’t make any calls and there was no power for internet, texting, or emailing. The day before our wedding, we had no other choice but to postpone our wedding until a later date.”

Wedding insurance is the perfect addition to your wedding budget because it will inevitably save your wedding in case of disaster. Wedding ceremonies and receptions take a significant amount of time and money to plan. If your wedding had to be cancelled due to an illness in the family or emergency or you need to make new accommodations when there’s an issue with a vendor, you may still be responsible for most of the costs and perhaps some new ones as well. Special events insurance will protect your investment, and the only money you will be paying is the deductible. Also, don’t forget to insure your engagement ring! Ask your jeweler to provide an official appraisal of your ring that can be provided to your insurance company.
